Sometimes a fitout has so many features it’s hard to cover them all, Kinn+Derm is definitely one of those fitouts. The design brief for this restaurant, located in the newly built restaurant precinct of Westfield Chermside, located in the northern suburbs of Brisbane was pretty clear – create a carnival atmosphere. The two-level establishment features corrugated iron as part of the interior and exterior walls, staircases and decorative items, brightly painted shelving highlighted with Hollywood lights, both external and internal artificial hanging plants, vintage tin signage and neon coloured tube lights shaped in a Ferris wheel, making it one of the liveliest and eye-catching spots in the entire centre. Downstairs the 4 metre tall custom-made New Guinea rosewood solid timber shopfront featuring reeded glass entices diners inside where they can be seated in one of four Ferris wheel pods or step out the powder-coated aluminium triple slider doors and sit under the Blackbutt VJ timber cladded balcony ceiling. The staircase, featuring corrugated iron rises and timber treads, leads past a recycled brick onto a timber landing where black steel balustrade with stainless mesh infills finish off the stairwell. Immense consideration of the finer details is evident in the traditional Thai Carnival wallpaper, an imported tree built with a fibreglass trunk with timber branches and silk leaves, stretched canvas lightboxes, a Cinematic light box in a vintage design and furnishings such as the Chesterfield lounge suits. A fully functioning commercial kitchen is located on the lower level whilst a marble topped cocktail bar and brightly coloured 44 gallon drums with a timber top tables and multi-coloured stools are gathered close by upstairs. The Kinn Group is one of the most reliable providers of authentic and delicious Thai food around Australia.
